As part of the project, an online geographic information system was developed, providing access to visualized, reliable, and quality-controlled abundance data for the non-native invasive lionfish (Pterois miles) and the invasive pufferfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus) in Greek seas. This system enables direct access to species presence data and facilitates the monitoring of their movements, provided that presence data are fed into the system in real time.
This information allows for the prediction of changes in species distribution, supporting more effective management at both local and broader levels. In the initial project proposal, a work package was included for the development of a mobile application that would enable professional and amateur fishermen to contribute data directly. This package also included the creation of a database that would be linked in real time to the online information system. However, due to a lack of funding, this work package was not implemented, and only data collected by scientists and other collaborators (professional and amateur fishermen, and citizens) during the project were included.
